Wake dynamics of an oscillating cylinder in steady currents

Flow around a cylinder undergoing sinusoidal oscillations in steady currents represents an idealized simplification of real flow phenomena in many practical applications. An example of practical applications involves a riser pipe attached to a floating vessel that undergoes periodic oscillations induced by surface waves, in the presence of a background current. The direction of the riser oscillation is not necessarily the same as the direction of the steady current, due to the difference in the generation mechanisms of the cylinder motion and the steady current. In engineering applications, prediction of hydrodynamic forces on the cylinder is often required in the design and maintenance of cylindrical marine structures. Fundamentally, understanding of the interaction between the cylinder oscillation and the flow around the cylinder is a prerequisite for predicting the hydrodynamic forces on the cylinder. Due to the complex nature of these interactions, there is a lack of reliable methods for predicting hydrodynamic forces on the cylinder undergoing oscillations in steady current. The present talk presents some recent research progresses, achieved through a discovery project funded by Australian Research Council, on the topic.

程亮,现任华南理工大学海洋科学与工程学院院长,“信实”长聘教授,澳大利亚工程院院士。程亮教授先后获得清华大学学士(1978-1983),大连理工大学硕士(1983-1986)及博士(1987-1990)学位。1992-2021年任职于西澳大利亚大学,长期从事海底管道稳定性,海洋结构物涡激振动、泥沙运输、海床流固相互作用及多种工业流体的计算流体动力学模拟研究,发表期刊论文180余篇,被引6500余次。程亮教授多年来与工业界紧密合作,为诸多国内外大型海上油气,风电工程项目提供专家技术咨询和研发工作。在海底结构物冲刷,海底管缆在位稳定性及小尺度水动力学等领域取得了丰富的创新成果,解决了许多工程难题,创造了可观的经济效益。
